Description
This monograph is the first volume of the "Fauna Iberica" Series that
is devoted to the huge superfamily Scarabaeoida (order Coleoptera). The aim
of this book is to provide an updated picture of the Ibero-Balearic scarabaeid
fauna belonging to the families Lucanidae, Glaresidae, Trogidae, Ochodaeidae,
Geotrupidae, Hybosoridae, Orphnidae and Scarabaeidae. Except for the Lucanidae,
which show a phytophagous and sapro-xilophagous feeding behaviour, the remaining
groups are detritivorous beetles. They take part in the decay and mineralization
of organic matter, thus accelerating the nutrient and energy recycling. The
book provides a com prehensive
synthesis of the main advances on the taxonomy, phylogeny, biogeography, ecology
and biology of scarabaeid beetles during the second half of the XX century.
Detailed information is provided for each species. The reader will be able
to identify the adults of all species using dichotomous keys based mainly on
easily observable morphological characters. Complete references of the described
larval stages are given as well as keys for the identification of inmatures
of all families, some subfamilies (Lucanidae), genera (Trogidae, Bolboceratinae,
Scarabaeidae) and, in some cases, especies (Copris). The book is richly illustrated
with 116 plates and completed with an up-to-date and comprehensive literature
-more than 750 references- and a nomenclatural appendix.
